Hellsing vs Hellsing ultimate what’s better 2024
The original Hellsing anime had to abort the plot halfway through due to a lack of material (for the manga was young in those days), leaving the rest as filler.
It also needed more funding and interest from the director. While I quite enjoyed it (enough so that the first fanfic I ever read was a Hellsing fic) in the days before Hellsing Ultimate existed and before I’d read the manga, it doesn’t hold a candle to the Ovas.
Hellsing Ultimate is a series of OVAs following the Hellsing manga faithfully and with MUCH higher production values.` It also finished the plot and covered The Dawn, the 6-chapter prequel manga.
However, it cut some minor early elements of character development for a time since there was some measure of an assumption that the audience would have already seen the original anime.
It isn’t very pleasant, but Fullmetal Alchemist [Brotherhood] and Hunter X Hunter made the same choice with their anime reboots.
Once you’re done with the original plot, I’ll recommend Team Four Star’s parody, Hellsing Ultimate Abridged, which is hilarious.
As others have pointed out, the original had to develop their villain and plot after a bit. I enjoyed incognito as a villain. Also pointed out, Hellsing focused on substance while ultimately focused on style.
There was a major boost in art style and gore in Ultimate (which I enjoyed), but there needed to be more character development.
Hellsing vs Hellsing ultimate
Ultimate also had to add one tiny amount of fan service or decide when it was unnecessary. Beyond that, they are the same.
Now, I will answer a question you probably would have asked later. You should watch both. Which you watch first is up to you; do not watch the TFS edition first or second.
The first few episodes of Hellsing Ultimate sum up the original Hellsing story condensed (Like Dragonball Kai). Ultimate episodes are much longer than 45 minutes to the classic 20 minutes for the original 25 minutes.
Hellsing Ultimate continues with a story much further than the original series. Also, drawing art changed to more manga-like. Ultimately, Ultimate went up in quality/story and everything.

The differences are quite extensive
The original Hellsing anime ran much earlier: from 2001–2002. Because of that, the graphics in the original series weren’t very good.
The original anime also had a hard time following the manga, had a lot of fluff, and didn’t make any sense – which is why it was eventually cancelled.
Hellsing Ultimate was a remake that debuted in 2006, going until 2012. The episodes in Hellsing Ultimate are much more visually appealing (and longer, each episode being about an hour and a half).
I’d even go as far as to say that Hellsing Ultimate has some of the best graphics I’ve seen in an anime series – and admittedly, I’ve been watching anime for 15 years, so I’ve seen a lot of anime.
Hellsing Ultimate also follows more closely to the manga storyline. It has more Alucard screen time and offers scenes that delve into his past as Dracula and Vlad III Dracula.
Friends, Hellsing Ultimate, has an amazing plotline and does justice to the characters.
It’s also extremely gory and badass, one of its main appeals as a horror anime. I’ve seen both, but Hellsing Ultimate is and will always be the better anime.
How does Alucard die in Hellsing?
Alucard does not “die.” Alucard vanishes when Schrödinger lets himself be consumed by Alucard.
He must defeat each of the souls he once possessed to “recognize” himself (as not even Schrödinger can recognize himself anymore within the mass of souls collected).
After this occurs (30 years later!), Alucard returns to Hellsing and Seras and becomes “Scrhödinger’s cat,” existing everywhere and nowhere.
As “Vlad Tepes the Impaler,” he was beheaded and can be seen licking at the blood that had been spilt.
This, along with the cross being split simultaneously, symbolizes his transformation.
Who is Alucard in Hellsing?
Alucard is a vampire and the main protagonist of the Hellsing anime and manga series.
He is the most powerful warrior of the Hellsing Organization, which works against vampires and other such supernatural forces.
Alucard is no mere vampire; it has been implied that he is the most powerful vampire and entity in the entire series.
Read here his abilities:
- Superhuman senses
- Advanced Regeneration
- Superhuman speed
- Superhuman strength
- Defiance/manipulation of gravity
- Sharpshooting skills
- Summoning of familiars
- Creation of fledglings
- Advanced Combat
- Memory absorption (through victims’ blood)
- High resistance to most vampire weaknesses

It wasn’t done by Van Helsing alone but by the organization as a whole. Count, when in London, went to accomplish one of his goals, to take Mina Harker for himself.
Having seen a photograph of her and Jonathan, Dracula found he desired her, and in the middle of the night, he succeeded in biting her.
He proceeded to drink from and feed her his blood, making her a vampire and bonding her to himself as his servant Vampire.
Knowing time is short and the only way to save Mina is to defeat Dracula, Van Helsing leads a frantic search for the Count.
Due to her telepathic link to the No-Life King, they were able to use Mina to trace Dracula’s steps, finally finding his whereabouts after putting her into a hypnotic state.
The group finally followed the Count back to his castle and confronted him for a battle just before dawn.
After a fierce fight, Van Helsing cornered the Count and could drive a stake through the No-Life King, defeating the Count by the light of the coming dawn.
The wafer marks left Mina’s flesh, a fact that Van Helsing took the opportunity to shout at the disgraced Vampire.
However, Abraham decided not to deliver the finishing blow to his felled foe instead of taking Dracula’s now powerless form with him back to England. Hellsing vs Hellsing ultimate
What do Anime fans think of Hellsing?
Here are my thoughts:
Predictably, after a strong start, the plot doesn’t remain tight.
As the episodes went on, I found myself waiting for the end.
Of course, you can look up many reviews about the same, but one thing I liked about this one was the tone.
The anime felt grimy and a lot lighter in tone than Hellsing Ultimate. Its soundtrack also appropriately reflected this difference.
Alucard, the protagonist, feels less ‘darker’. The plot doesn’t quite grip you, but the tone is enjoyable. On the other hand, Hellsing Ultimate is executed with more faith in the manga.
The action scenes are more visceral; Alucard is darker, feels calmer during the quiet sections, and feels more like an unhinged madman during the heavier ones.
The soundtrack loses its ‘jazzy, cool’ vibe and takes on a more edgy, orchestral tone. The finale is a blaze of guns, fire, blood, and undead souls.
For people who’ve watched neither, I’d suggest watching the anime first and applying the three-episode rule. If you want to maximize your experience, spend much time with Alucard, Seras, and Integra, and watch both the anime and the OVA.
If I had to pick one experience, it would be the OVA, Hellsing Ultimate. The bird of Hermes is my name, Eating my wings to make me tame.
